My sister Ruth holding Sara.

It seems like only a short while ago that Jeff drove Ruth and Kaarel to the hospital when my niece Sara was about to be born. I remember holding her shortly after her birth; how small and fragile she seemed! It was also a major adjustment for me to see Ruth as a mother, and not just as my little sister.
Sara.
Some of you have been reading my Blatherings long enough to probably remember when I had a special Web site for Sara, and you contributed advice on my message board. Someday I will have to dig through my archives and post all that advice, so Sara can read it. A quick poll: how many of you were around when I had that site online? I'm curious.

She seems so grown-up now, my niece Sara. I can't believe she's nine years old! The years speed by so fast... yes, I know this borders on cliche, but I can see where the cliche comes from. She still lets me hug her sometimes, but instead of cuddling a complacent infant, I find my arms full of quicksilver. A brief hug and then bam, she's off to play soccer in the backyard, inventing or creating, tickling Annie, doing a science experiment, always ready to embrace the world. And every so often, I see a flash of the young woman she will someday be, and I am full of wonder. Happy birthday, Sara.
