What IS that thing that keeps searching for them in the gloom? Pretty creepy...
More singing in this chapter. Bill Sutton has pointed out that it's only reasonable for the hobbits to do so much singing because there wasn't much else to do on long journeys. He does have a point. And I did find the scene where the hobbits are all singing while bathing in Frodo's new house pretty amusing. I also like the casual mention that Pippin was singing "one of Bilbo's favourite bath-songs", implying that Bilbo actually had a repertoire of songs he liked to sing in the bath.
Liked the fact that Frodo's friends already knew that Frodo was planning to take off despite the fact that he thought he had been careful in not giving away anything, and that they also knew about the Ring. There's more to these hobbits that meets the eye (or ear).

You have hit upon one of the major themes of the book: "There's more to these hobbits than meets the eye" indeed!

I grew up thinking singing was always a part of family. It seemed natural to me that the hobbits would sing when they were together.

It's not just that Bilbo had several songs for the bath, he had several songs for everything. The point here is that while hobbits aren't illiterate, they live in a non-literary society. Thus, much of their "history" is preserved in songs and poems, just as Beowolf, The Inferno and Shakespear are poems.

Louis - As an Ozark hillbilly, I can relate to that. Shared songs are a powerful tool for connecting the generations. A lot is lost when we no longer share. I love the way my son and I can discuss ME for hours just like in this Fellowship.

hail ye fellow hillbilly!
songs are are pretty important to people living in the middle of nowhere. i live in ghent kentucky, so i know. i like 2 sing "the song that never ends" and "the song that gets on everybody's nerves" during class field trips.
