Yay! Gimli's ok! Though wounded. :-(
I was moved by the vow made by Legolas and Gimli, that if both returned safe after all this was over, then they would visit Fangorn and Helm's Deep together. It sounded pretty foreboding, though. Why do I get the feeling that one of them isn't going to make it? :-( :-(
Argh, this is what comes out of actually starting to CARE about this LOTR characters.
Cool to see the Ent storyline and this particular thread intersect.
Love the way the others find Pippin and Merry. :-D Love those hobbits. I really enjoyed that whole light-hearted scene, much needed after that gruesome battle segment. And the last line of the chapter made me laugh out loud:

*evil chuckle*, i was here before everyone else! do you actually like the way in which Tolkien moves by taking one thread of the story, completing it [to a point] and then moving on? it is interesting, i agree, but it can get a little confusing at times, trying to figure out the connections. oh well, i guess we don't want to have everything ready on a silver platter do we?

While it has nothing to do with this chapter, though I'd put out this new pic of the Fellowship and some of that breathtaking Middle Earth (aka New Zealand) landscape we're all frothing to see come December.

I've always loved Gimli's description of the caves at Helm's Deep, too. We haven't seen him so poetic and passionate since he left the presence of Galadriel :). It's moving to see him share that wonder with Legolas in such an open way and I really like the vow they make to travel back together to the caves and Fangorn someday, too.
And I love it that you have become so attached to all these characters :).

Loved your comic. And your burning questions. I od'ed on LotR on Saturday and so I'm taking a break. But I am still really enjoying watching you read it.

I really love the part where Gimli and Legolas competes in orc killing, very amusing ;-)
Its been a while since I read this part, but if my memory doesn't fail me, you're up for a couple of exciting chapters now.

Tolkien and his threads are nothing compared to a Star Wars novel. I still get lost in some of those books even after reading them 2 or3 times.

I'm really enjoying reading your weblog - I found you by way of theonering.net as well. I read the books again in February--after a lapse of 25 (gulp!) years--so they are pretty fresh in my mind. I was waiting until you got to this chapter to see how (if!) you reacted to finding Pippin and Merry at the ruin of Isengard. Your reaction was similar to mine - I loved it!
Read on...

Another interesting thing about this chapter. If I recall correctly, Aragorn joins Legolas, Gimli and the two Hobbits for a visit. I always found this rather cool. It's been well established that Aragorn is a Very Important Figure in the scheme of things, but he takes time here to hang out with the lower ranking characters, rather than with Gandalf and Theoden. This fact has always tickled me, I think it reveals a lot about Aragorn's true qualities of leadership.

I think that what shows most about Aragorn in that little rest that the remainder of the Fellowship has is that he kicks back and looks just like Strider again. I always liked Strider much more than Aragorn, personally.
And Deb, I love reading how involved you're getting with the books. The fact that you cheered when you found out that Gandalf was still alive tickled me in particular. Great to remember that LoTR is always able to pull more people into its wierd web. Can't wait for your reactions to the rest of the saga!

Yeah, I always preferred Strider to Aragorn to. I find myself kind of missing him as the story moves along. I think Pippin might feel something like that too, judging by his comment. But actually, guys, this, and their hanging out together is in the next chapter...

Katarina,
You're absolutely right, sorry. I don't think I gave away any major spoilers, but I'm sorry. I don't have a copy of LOTR here at work, and I mistakenly thought Deb was at the Flotsam and Jetsam chapter. I'll be more careful....
