[For Scott Snyder, for flyers for his tape release party at OVFF, 1998-ish(?)] [written by Paul Kwinn] Such a complex man is this W. Scott "Cosmo" Snyder.Ê Many know him from completely different contexts, not even suspecting that these diverse and amazing achievements could come from the same person.Ê Who would think, for instance, that the same man who took Korea by storm with his depiction of the lead character in "Godspell", could possibly have also brought about the formation of several filk super-groups?Ê That the author of the bestseller "Better Living Through Welsh Yodeling" could also have served as chairman for Bill Clinton's Advisory Panel on Filk? (The NEA is still chafing at that one.)Ê That the man who is responsible for the heartbroken sighs of millions of filk groupies on 7 continents, also served as Gary Kasparov's strategy advisor during the Grandmaster's short-lived (but spectacular) foray into the competitive world of "Magic the Gathering"?Ê That the babe, wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a mandolin case, would have grown to the man who won awards for his brilliant (and novel) beer-brewing techniques?Ê Well, probably nobody.Ê Most of it's not true.Ê But, dammit, it should've been! The true bits however, do include an amazing talent with guitars and mandolin, excellent song-writing and singing skills, the ability to make the ladies' hearts go pitty-pat, the brewing of beer, a considerable familiarity with Magic, and, strangely enough, the Korean "Godspell" production. His first filk tape is the self-produced and self-engineered "Bardic Lug": an excellent album, containing songs about food, life with computers, gorgeous aliens, hobbits, movies & TV.Ê With its release at 1997's Ohio Valley Filk Festival, he's hoping to get rolling on some of those other achievements. |
