X-files

I guess I got interested in The X-Files pretty much the way anyone else does. A fellow filk parodist who knew I liked slash pointed me to a mailing list for male fans of slash. It turned out that all those guys wanted to talk about was The X-Files and The Sentinel. Eventually, I read one of the many online X-Files slash stories, then more, and got hooked on the Mulder/Krycek stories. I decided to see what this The X-Files stuff was all about. The movie happened to be coming out at that time at a theater near me, so I walked over and watched it. It was pretty good, so I decided to watch the TV series. Not owning a TV, I arranged with a friend of mine to start taping them to watch together. I bought him cable service, and when his VCR gave out, I bought him a new one. (Actually, once he got a job he paid me back.) According to an episode list we downloaded, we caught up on 95% of the episodes over the next several months, and also kept up with the 6th season that was starting.

Needless to say, I was very disappointed: there isn't nearly as much subtext as the slash writers seem to see. At least as far as Mulder/Krycek goes, anyway. The Mulder/Skinner writers have a somewhat better case.

If anyone knows which wireless company Mulder uses, please let me know. I want that one. Not only does his coverage area include Native American reservations in the middle of the desert, not to mention uninhabited areas nearby, but it still works when he's underground in a buried freight car, as long as one square foot of sky is visible overhead. (For those who have trouble remembering the episode, I'm talking about 2x25, the one where Scully muscles Mulder's unconscious body into her car, not forgetting to pack his cell-phone charger, and drives him 2500 miles for an emergency spiritual healing, sort of like the opposite of the way Disney's Pocahontas ended)
