The purpose of this FAQ is to provide answers to questions commonly asked within the filking community. I've been a member of the filking community for about 25 years now as both a listener and a performer, and hope that the info provided here will be of use to new filkers as well as those curious about this whole "filk" thing. Many thanks to those who have contributed. Please note that my opinions may not reflect those of other filkers. This FAQ should *not* be regarded as being definitive, but only as a rough guide; I will be updating info over time. Wherever possible, I have also included links to other sources of related information. Unfortunately I've had to turn off commenting because of spammers but plan to reinstate commenting once I've switched over to Wordpress on the new server. When a performer forgets lyrics or guitar chords, filkers will sometimes call out, "Frank Hayes disease, give generously!" Those of you not familiar with Frank Hayes might be curious about this strange affliction. Frank Hayes is indeed a real person. Here's his bio from Duckon. As you can read from his bio, Frank developed a reputation for forgetting songs long before he started filking. "By 1983 or so, my ability to forget had reached legendary status," Frank writes. "Some filkers claimed they got temporary amnesia just from sitting in the same room as me. On one amazing (but true) occasion, Heather Alexander borrowed a guitar, not knowing it was mine--and promptly forgot a song she had known for years." Comments? Suggestions? Please post below.
