The purpose of this FAQ is to provide answers to questions commonly asked within the filking community. I've been a member of the filking community for about 25 years now as both a listener and a performer, and hope that the info provided here will be of use to new filkers as well as those curious about this whole "filk" thing. Many thanks to those who have contributed. Please note that my opinions may not reflect those of other filkers. This FAQ should *not* be regarded as being definitive, but only as a rough guide; I will be updating info over time. Wherever possible, I have also included links to other sources of related information. Unfortunately I've had to turn off commenting because of spammers but plan to reinstate commenting once I've switched over to Wordpress on the new server. Informal term for "Big Name Filker". Usually refers to someone who is well-known in the filk community but like the term "filk", the exact definition varies depending on the person you ask. Comments? Suggestions? Please post below.
BNF ("Bee En Eff") is also used more generally to mean "Big Name Fan", with much the same connotations... and I think the Filker version is actually derived from Fan. "Well known" is probably about as specific as you can get. It tends to also imply "respected" but not necessarily that the speaker shares that respect or that the respect is unconditional/general. And it does imply that they are members of the fannish/filkish community (as appropriate); a well-known and respected author who doesn't socialize with fans may have a Big Name but wouldn't be a BNF. (There should be a crosspointer to TLI -- Three Letter Initialism -- which BNF is one of many instances of. I work for one.) Posted by: at August 13, 2004 01:11 AM
