Main < FilkFAQ

The purpose of this FAQ is to provide answers to questions commonly asked within the filking community. I've been a member of the filking community for about 25 years now as both a listener and a performer, and hope that the info provided here will be of use to new filkers as well as those curious about this whole "filk" thing. Many thanks to those who have contributed. Please note that my opinions may not reflect those of other filkers. This FAQ should *not* be regarded as being definitive, but only as a rough guide; I will be updating info over time. Wherever possible, I have also included links to other sources of related information. Unfortunately I've had to turn off commenting because of spammers but plan to reinstate commenting once I've switched over to Wordpress on the new server. Dandelion Report FilkFAQ: Filk songs written for or about SPECIFIC FILKERS? « Filk songs about SPECIFIC CONVENTIONS | Main | What are the differences between filk conventions? »

Question: Filk songs written for or about SPECIFIC FILKERS?

What filk songs do you know or have written that are about or were written for SPECIFIC FILKERS? I will be relying heavily on the filk community to contribute to this directory. Over time, I'm hoping to cover as many of the popular filk song topics as possible.

I'll start the list off with some of my own....

SONGS:
Hey Tom! about Tom Jeffers
Ich Mag Shokolade for Katy Droege and Juliane Honisch, when they were Interfilk Guests
Library Boy for Rand Bellavia
Life Is A Bowl of Oreo Cookies - for Lissa Allcock
Lullaby For Gustavo for Diana Huey (Interfilk songwriting item)
Ode To Kathleen Sloan
Parody Man inspired by Mark Osier
Rumours About Redheads about Allison Durno
Truffles! about Mike Browne

Please post your suggestions using the comment form at the bottom of this page. Also see the responses to this Dandelion Report LJ entry.

Here are some that come to mind immediately:

"Play It Slow" by Cat Faber, about Joe Bethancourt;
"Howie in Waltz Time" by Cat Faber, about Howie Harrison;
"Box of Fairies" by Kathleen Sloane, about Gwen Knighton.

Some filkers have songs about themselves, such as Kathleen's "Catalog Queen", but that's a little different.

There are also tribute songs for filkers who have passed on; this may also be a little different.

There are a number of songs celebrating filk that are about a bunch of different filkers, such as "The Filk was Great at This Year's Westercon", by Joe Bethancourt, or Jeff Bohnhoff's "The Pharaohs of Filk".

"Juanita and the Belle", and "Juanita Henry", by Anne Passovoy and Murray Porath respectively, both immortalizing the riverboat filksing cruise at the Louisville NASFIC (the convention's name is eluding me)
"The Ballad of Gordy Dickson" by Ben Bova
"The Biggest Filksing in the World" by Margaret Middleton, lists a gaggle of Midwestern filking notables from the late 1970's.
"With his Sketchpad Underneath his Arm" by Bob Asprin, about Kelly Freas.
"Gary the Grim" by Glenn Glazer and Paul Willett, about Gary Anderson

There's also another one about Mike Browne, "The Cookie Man", TTTO Gordon Lightfoot's "The Pony Man." Sorry I can't credit the author, but my hard copy is packed in a box somewhere until the expansion on our house is done.

Also, I did one for Kanef (& did it at the OVFF dead dog, actually, for the 1st time in years) TTTO Stan Rogers' "Lies" called "Lines:"

"....Lines, those lines
He's messing with the songs we love
& even worse, he's messing with our minds
With those gawdawful lines"

It just so happens that I've just finished writing a song about OVFF. The idea struck me in the car on the way back to Maryland. It's not the Knight's usual fare, so I doubt we'll ever perform it, except maybe in an open filk as an experiment. Please let me know what you think.

"Ohio Valley Filk Fest" -
(To the tune of "Pleasant Valley Sunday" by The Monkees)-

Tom Smith is over in the Con Suite tuning up and sounding fine.
And in the ballroom, playing one shots you'll find Dandelion Wine.

It's the Ohio Valley Filk Fest! (Festival)
Music playing everywhere!
Love songs, parodies and twisted tunes,
The filkers come to share!

Hear Leslie Fish, she got her wish, she's won a Pegasus Award!
The Hucksters room has, we assume, all the CDs you can afford!

It's the Ohio Valley Filk Fest! (Festival)
Honored List-en-ers beware!
The Guest of Honor has his concert soon,
And all the fans are there!

Ookla The Mok just stands in shock as Urban Tapestry performs!
The Boogie Knights are taking flight before the start of autumn storms!

Not sure if it counts, but when James Langdal (sp) and Matthew Tepper visited the Twin Cities sometime in the 1970s, members of Minn-Stf gathered at the airport with musical insturments (Drum, guitars, trombone and many kazoos) and a song to the tune "Ode to Joy", written for the occasion. I remember only a little bit of it:
"James Langdall and Matthew Tepper, welcome here this early morn,
All the way to Minnesota from the land of Californ."
