Quote: Mark Twain
"I notice that you use plain, simple language, short words and brief sentences. That is the way to write English - it is the modern way and the best way. Stick to it; don't let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in. When you catch an adjective, kill it. No, I don't mean utterly, but kill most of them - then the rest will be valuable. They weaken when they are close together. They give strength when they are wide apart. An adjective habit, or a wordy, diffuse, flowery habit, once fastened upon a person, is as hard to get rid of as any other vice." - Mark Twain

Quote: Pearl S. Buck
"I don't wait for moods. You accomplish nothing if you do that. Your mind must know it has got to get down to work." - Pearl S. Buck
Love this quote. I've encountered too many so-called writers who angst to anyone who will listen about not being inspired to write, writer's block, etc. If you're relying on writing for income, you find a way to write, inspired or not. Don't waste time talking about how you'd like to write...just DO it! Writers write, that's all there is to it.

Comic updated
My Life In A Nutshell has been updated; see bottom of this page. The Toronto Star interviewed Jeff today about the whole ice-out ritual thing, and there's a non-zero chance they may publish the strip below with the article.
I'll be out of town for the weekend and possibly early next week (depends on ice-out), so no updates until then.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Quote: Virginia Woolf
"It is worth mentioning, for future reference, that the creative power which bubbles so pleasantly in beginning a new book quiets down after a time, and one goes on more steadily. Doubts creep in. Then one becomes resigned. Determination not to give in, and the sense of an impending shape keep one at it more than anything." - Virginia Woolf

Quote: Alice Walker
"Deliver me from writers who say the way they live doesn't matter. I'm not sure a bad person can write a good book. If art doesn't make us better, then what on earth is it for?" - Alice Walker

Writing habits poll results
Follow-up to my writing habits poll: About half of the writers who responded said they set their goals by the number of hours they write, half by the number of words. I tend to go by the latter when working on fiction, though this gets somewhat confusing when I'm revising.
