Modern American Geek seeks freelancers

If you are into, and would like to write or draw about games, anime, politics from a new perspective, sociology, art, music, travel, or the human condition, serious or humorous, please no queries, just submit the material you would like me to consider for publication. All quality work is considered.

(NOTE: If you send URLs to online portfolios, resumes, or "samples", your submission will be deleted and likely not to be read. Please send the specific piece you wish to have considered!!!)

For writing, The Modern American Geek accepts articles, essays, short stories, poetry, reviews, journal entries (no internet shorthand please, unless being used for a specific reason), observations, and the like. For articles and essays, please use some organization and professionalism, but for fiction and poetry feel free to experiment, in fact it is encouraged. Conventional things have the mainstream market.

Reviews should consider un or under-appreciated CDs, movies, or books. These may be new or old, release date is not a factor. Journal entries can be self involved banter as long as it is well written and interesting self involved banter. Entire short journals and blogs are considered, if they are insightful.

As for art, black and white as well as color photography and digital scans of work is considered (although, keep in mind only two or three color submissions are considered each issue). We like the avant garde, the strange, "ugly" people and everyday objects in a new light. Landscapes are considered if they are impressive, urban landscapes are preferred.

Email submissions: email the appropriate editor with work; text should be within the body of the email or as a .doc attachment, images should be within the body of the email or as a .jpg, .gif, or .bmp attachment. Please include the name to which you'd prefer to be credited by, as well as an email address and/or website. Snail mail submissions are only acceptable with photography from previous contributors. If you do not have a scanner available to you, a local copy shop should carry one, or hound your classmates/co-workers to let you borrow one.

jinnigan@gmail.com -- articles and essays.
square.cactus@gmail.com -- poetry, prose, photography, and art.
geekspeak@cluemail.com -- general questions, comments, concerns, etc.

(NOTE: Sex, sports, and fashion articles and essays are usually not considered. These elements in fiction are usually fine, though.)

Deadlines: The deadlines for the year are September first, December first, March first, and June first. All work received before these deadlines will be considered for that season's issue, all work after will be considered for the next season's issue.

Remember, be original and creative. Even go so far as to cawfy tawk. The editors are patient, laid back (but hard working) editors. Resumes will not improve your chance, because all work should speak for itself. The English language paired with a pen and a camera, are the three most dangerously fun and flexible tools you will ever come across.

Sincerely,
--Kait Jarboe and Sean Jin

Information Scientist/writer

Answerbag is a collection of user-generated frequently-asked questions that is built and moderated by its community. We are dedicated to making a product that will help its community, and we want people with the same passion. We are a small startup looking for a motivated, self-directed information scientist to lead organization of its constantly-growing database of questions and answers.

Rather than give a laundry list of vague qualifications and experiences that we’re looking for, we’ve provided a list of things we want you to do:

- Audit the site taxonomy, write guidelines for the category structure, and implement recommended changes
- Create categorization guide for moderators
- Help copy edit, moderate, and organize incoming submissions
- Help identify and recruit expert moderators for various categories
- Oversee paid and volunteer moderators
- Come up with your own ideas on how to make the site more useful!

Answerbag has been growing steadily for over a year now, and it’s time to expand. Our workplace is virtual, so you may work from home. We will need you part-time initially, but as the site grows, so will the time requirements, so this will likely become a full-time position.

To apply, please send your resume and a cover letter explaining why you want this position, and what you’ve done that would indicate you can tackle this role.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exchange-Traded Funds (ETF) Newsletter Writer Wanted

One of the nation's largest online financial newsletter publishers -- StreetAuthority.com -- is currently looking for someone with at least five to ten years of experience in the securities market to write an investment newsletter that delivers research and analysis on a variety of exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Qualified candidates should have a strong background in the financial services field, quality writing skills and a profitable track record of successful investment performance.

The writer will be responsible for writing a weekly or biweekly investment newsletter that will recommend specific ETF investing and trading ideas based both fundamental and technical analysis. The newsletter will have a heavy focus on sector rotation and will look to profit from outperforming sectors and other market segments. It will also discuss other longer-term market trends and will give specific, actionable financial guidance. Each newsletter will be roughly 10-15 pages in length.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for the stock market and will be available throughout the week in the evenings to monitor the stocks they cover and to issue short News Flashes if market events warrant. In addition, he/she will be available to write one new 10-15 page newsletter on the weekends.

If you are interested in applying for this writing position, then please email us at Careers@StreetAuthority.com and include the following:

1. Your resume.
2. Any writing samples you may have.
3. An explanation of your track record. Have you been investing successfully for quite some time? Can you document your track record?
4. A brief description of your investing philosophy. What do you look for in a good investment?
5. How we can contact you.

TIME COMMITMENT
Again, the ideal candidate will be available to write 2 to 4 newsletters per month (roughly 10 to 15 pages in length each). All told, this part-time freelance job will likely require about 15-20 hours of work each week, all of which can be completed in your spare time.

COMPENSATION
We're offering a generous compensation package for this part-time freelance writing position. You need not live in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area to apply. All writing can be completed from your own home office.

We're looking to move forward quickly with this
hiring process, so please contact us ASAP if you are interested in the position.
