WRITING SAMPLE

Introduction
As part of the application process we require a writing sample for our review. Samples will be according to the following criteria:

· Ability of the author to adhere to the guidelines provided below
· Clarity of writing
· Grammar
· Quality of questions and distractors

Instructions
1. Write a two-paragraph passage, approximately 300 words long. The passage should be a topic of interest to Grade 3 students, animals, history, sports, etc.

Please write the passage at a 2.5 – 3.5 reading grade level. Use the following website to measure the grade level of your passage: http://www.lexile.com.

2. Please create 8 multiple-choice test questions (including answers) that measure learners’ reading comprehension. Questions should include:

· 2 questions which ask learners to identify the main idea of the passage.
· 2 questions which ask learners to place an item in a sequence of events.
· 2 questions that tests learners’ understanding of cause and effect.
· 2 questions which ask learners to recall a detail from the passage and match it to the “main idea” of the paragraph.

· Failure to submit a writing sample will result in your application being rejected.
· Please include Lexile Analyzer results. Save your paragraphs as .txt files to use this tool. It does not work with .doc files http://www.lexile.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?view=ed&tabindex=2&tabid=16&tabpageid=335
· Writing samples are not the only criterion for selection.

Application Instructions:
Please submit your resume and writing test sample and Lexile score to hr@cognitivearts.com.
